Exploring Kruger National Park: A South African Treasure

Nestled in the northeastern corner of South Africa, Kruger National Park spans the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, covering an expansive 19,485 square kilometers (7,523 square miles), or 19,485,000,000 square meters. This vast game reserve stretches 360 kilometers (220 miles), equating to 360,000,000 square meters, from north to south and averages 65 kilometers (40 miles), or 65,000,000 square meters, in width—reaching up to 90 kilometers (56 miles), or 90,000,000 square meters, at its broadest point. Its administrative hub is at Skukuza, overseeing a landscape bordered by the Limpopo River to the north, the Crocodile River to the south, and the Lebombo Mountains to the east, separating it from Mozambique. To the west lie Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, with Zimbabwe to the north.

The park’s origins date back to 1898 when the South African Republic began protecting parts of the region, starting with the Sabi Game Reserve in the south to curb overhunting and safeguard wildlife. In 1902, James Stevenson-Hamilton became its first warden, a role he held for 44 years until retiring in 1946. The Singwitsi Reserve, named after the Shingwedzi River, was established in 1903 and later merged into the park. By 1926, these reserves and surrounding farms united to form Kruger National Park, South Africa’s first national park, spanning 19,485,000,000 square meters. Early tourism began in 1923 with the South African Railways’ “Round in Nine” tours, drawing visitors along the Selati line from Komatipoort to Tzaneen.

Over time, the park grew. Fencing started in 1959 along the Crocodile River, extending to the western and northern boundaries by 1960, and later to the east, aiming to control disease, secure borders, and deter poaching. In 1969, the Makuleke people were forcibly removed from the Pafuri triangle in the north, relocated southward to integrate their land into the park’s 19,485,000,000 square meters. In 1996, they reclaimed 19,842 hectares (198.42 square kilometers), or 198,420,000 square meters, of this area. Rather than resettling, they partnered with private investors to develop game lodges, earning royalties from tourism. Today, Kruger forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, linking with Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park and Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park, and is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere
